What is boiler relocation?

Relocation moves a boiler to a different position and changes the connections around it. A utility-room move may be straightforward; a loft or garage position needs careful thought about access, frost protection, flue routing and future maintenance.

Signs you may need boiler relocation

  • A kitchen refit needs the wall space currently occupied by the boiler.
  • A utility room could provide a more practical boiler position.
  • Building alterations make the current flue route unsuitable.

From the first checks to handover

  • Feasibility: check the boiler’s condition and whether approved flue parts remain available.
  • New position: check wall support, service clearances, access, drainage and flue-terminal distances. Loft proposals require safe access and suitable working space.
  • Route planning: calculate the new gas supply requirements and plan heating, water, condensate and electrical routes before cupboards or floors are closed.
  • Moving and reconnecting: isolate and drain as needed, support the appliance safely and reconnect it using suitable fittings and the specified flue.
  • Completion: test, recommission and explain the installation. Agree who closes the old flue opening, removes waste and repairs plaster, tiles and flooring.

What affects the price

Allow £1,000–£3,000 as a broad starting budget. This is indicative, not a fixed quote or a measured local average. Distance alone does not set the price. Crossing a floor, roof access, concealed pipework and difficult condensate drainage can dominate the labour. Simple nearby moves may cost less than the guide range; a new boiler is an additional item unless expressly included.

The service guide allows 1–3 days. That is a planning estimate, not a promised completion time; diagnosis, parts delivery and additional work may extend the job. Check the total includes the agreed work and ask how any extra charges will be approved.

Before the engineer visits

Describe both the current and proposed positions, including which floor they are on. Mention the kitchen or building-work schedule, access restrictions and the boiler’s age. Ask for a comparison between moving it and fitting a replacement in the new position.

Safety checks before you appoint anyone

Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the current ID card and its work categories against the Gas Safe Register; a plumbing qualification alone is not enough for gas boiler work. For an installation, replacement or move, ask who will handle the applicable notification and handover records. England and Wales use Building Regulations compliance certificates for notified boiler installations; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different procedures. The Building Regulations guidance explains the different routes. A warranty registration and a commissioning record are separate from building-control paperwork.

Request boiler relocation quotations

Boiler-prices.co.uk introduces homeowners to independent heating businesses. One online enquiry can lead to up to four quotations, depending on the job, postcode and engineer availability. We do not employ the engineers or carry out the work. Companies joining the network are asked for relevant insurance details and references; you should still check the firm you intend to appoint.

Request up to four quotes. Agree any survey or diagnostic fee directly with the engineer before a visit. The chosen business is responsible for its quotation, appointments and work.

Questions homeowners ask

These answers explain the starting points for a discussion with an engineer.

How much does boiler relocation cost?

The national guide range is £1,000–£3,000. Your written quote depends on the appliance, access and agreed scope. Additional work can take the total outside this range.

Can a boiler always be moved into a loft?

No. The engineer must assess the appliance instructions, structure, flue, frost protection and safe access for installation and servicing. A loft move is only suitable if those requirements can be met.

How long should I allow for boiler relocation?

Allow around 1–3 days for the work described in this guide. Confirm timing with the engineer because access, parts and unexpected faults can change the schedule.

Will I receive four quotations?

Up to four quotations may be available. The number depends on your postcode, the work required and the capacity of suitable independent engineers. There is no obligation to accept a quote.
