Price the boiler job, not just the appliance
Keeping a new boiler on the same wall is very different from installing central heating for the first time. Removing a cylinder, moving the flue or replacing old heating pipes adds work that a boiler-only price will not show. Start with the job you actually need, then compare what each engineer includes.
Boiler-prices.co.uk lets you submit one enquiry for up to four quotations from independent local heating businesses. Availability varies by postcode and service. Sending the form is free, and you choose whether to accept any quotation.
Which service fits your plans?
- Gas Boiler Installation: A first-time installation gives a home a gas boiler and the connections it needs, rather than simply exchanging an appliance. It can mean replacing electric heaters with radiators, bringing mains gas into a renovation project or rebuilding worn-out central heating pipework.
- Gas Boiler Replacement: A replacement exchanges an existing gas boiler for a new appliance while keeping suitable parts of the heating system. Staying in the same position can simplify the job, but the old flue, gas pipe and controls still need checking before anything is reused.
- Combi Boiler Installation: A combi boiler supplies heating and heats mains water as it is needed. A combi swap is relatively contained work; converting a system or regular boiler can also involve removing a hot-water cylinder, redundant tanks and their pipework.
- Gas Boiler Repairs: A repair starts with finding the cause of a fault. A lockout code, falling pressure or a cold tap can have several causes, so a diagnosis is needed before deciding which component, if any, should be replaced.
- Gas Boiler Servicing: A boiler service is planned maintenance carried out to the manufacturer’s instructions. It includes inspecting the appliance and checking safe operation, with cleaning and component attention as specified for that model. It is useful even when heating and hot water seem normal.
- Boiler Relocation: Relocation moves a boiler to a different position and changes the connections around it. A utility-room move may be straightforward; a loft or garage position needs careful thought about access, frost protection, flue routing and future maintenance.
A useful first budget
A gas boiler replacement is typically budgeted at £1,800–£4,000 in our guide, compared with £2,500–£6,500 for first-time installation or a wider system refit. Combi installations and conversions have a guide range of £2,200–£5,000. These are indicative national ranges; extensive pipework or building work may take the price higher.
For smaller jobs, the site allows £100–£600 for repairs and £70–£130 for servicing. Moving an existing boiler has a guide range of £1,000–£3,000, although a simple nearby move may be cheaper. Our quote guide and cost table explain the scope and common extras.
Three questions worth asking at the survey
- Will this boiler suit our hot-water use? A combi depends on the incoming mains flow; keeping a cylinder can be sensible when several outlets are used together.
- What can safely stay? Existing radiators may be reusable, but the engineer needs to assess leaks, sludge and heating output. Flue and gas-supply suitability need checking too.
- What will be finished when you leave? Agree testing, controls setup, waste removal and making good, along with the records and warranty registration.
How the introduction works
Boiler-prices.co.uk introduces homeowners to independent heating businesses. One online enquiry can lead to up to four quotations, depending on the job, postcode and engineer availability. We do not employ the engineers or carry out the work. Companies joining the network are asked for relevant insurance details and references; you should still check the firm you intend to appoint.
Tell us what you have now and what you want changed. Available engineers may ask for accessible photographs, agree a survey or discuss a diagnostic visit. Compare their written scope, price and proposed dates. Any appointment or contract is arranged directly with the business, and a visit may be chargeable if agreed beforehand.
Gas safety and maintenance
Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the current ID card and its work categories against the Gas Safe Register; a plumbing qualification alone is not enough for gas boiler work.
Annual servicing is commonly required by manufacturers to maintain a warranty; check your own terms. Landlord gas safety checks have a separate purpose and should be booked explicitly when required. Do not remove a casing to investigate a fault for a quote.
For an installation, replacement or move, ask who will handle the applicable notification and handover records. England and Wales use Building Regulations compliance certificates for notified boiler installations; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different procedures. The Building Regulations guidance explains the different routes. A warranty registration and a commissioning record are separate from building-control paperwork.
Request boiler quotations with your postcode, appliance details and a short description of the work.
