What is gas boiler replacement?

A replacement exchanges an existing gas boiler for a new appliance while keeping suitable parts of the heating system. Staying in the same position can simplify the job, but the old flue, gas pipe and controls still need checking before anything is reused.

Signs you may need gas boiler replacement

  • Repeated faults have made another repair hard to justify.
  • Your engineer has identified a major fault on an ageing boiler.
  • You want to plan a replacement before the next heating season.

Not sure it is time yet? Our checklist of the signs you need a new boiler helps you weigh age, repair bills and efficiency.

From the first checks to handover

  • Existing system: inspect radiator water condition and discuss known leaks.
  • Specification: choose an output suited to heat loss and hot-water demand; confirm the model, warranty conditions and controls in writing.
  • Safe removal: isolate and disconnect the old appliance, protect nearby cupboards and arrange disposal. Reusing a location does not mean reusing the old flue.
  • Connections: assess gas supply capacity, install the compatible flue and condensate route, and replace unsuitable valves or pipe sections.
  • Completion: carry out the appropriate system clean, fit the specified filter and controls, add inhibitor, test combustion and operation, and complete commissioning and registration.

What affects the price

Allow £1,800–£4,000 as a broad starting budget. This is indicative, not a fixed quote or a measured local average. The appliance specification, flue access and cleaning method usually explain differences between replacement quotations. A roof flue may need access equipment. Gas pipe size is calculated from demand, length and fittings; it is not a universal 22 mm rule.

The service guide allows 1–2 days. That is a planning estimate, not a promised completion time; diagnosis, parts delivery and additional work may extend the job. Check the total includes the agreed work and ask how any extra charges will be approved.

Before the engineer visits

Give the existing model, its position and the fault history. Photograph only accessible external details, including the flue outlet from ground level. Ask whether cupboard alterations, old-appliance removal and decoration are included.

Safety checks before you appoint anyone

Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the current ID card and its work categories against the Gas Safe Register; a plumbing qualification alone is not enough for gas boiler work. For an installation, replacement or move, ask who will handle the applicable notification and handover records. England and Wales use Building Regulations compliance certificates for notified boiler installations; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different procedures. The Building Regulations guidance explains the different routes. A warranty registration and a commissioning record are separate from building-control paperwork.

Request gas boiler replacement quotations

Boiler-prices.co.uk introduces homeowners to independent heating businesses. One online enquiry can lead to up to four quotations, depending on the job, postcode and engineer availability. We do not employ the engineers or carry out the work. Companies joining the network are asked for relevant insurance details and references; you should still check the firm you intend to appoint.

Request up to four quotes. Agree any survey or diagnostic fee directly with the engineer before a visit. The chosen business is responsible for its quotation, appointments and work.

Questions homeowners ask

These answers explain the starting points for a discussion with an engineer.

How much does gas boiler replacement cost?

The national guide range is £1,800–£4,000. Your written quote depends on the appliance, access and agreed scope. Additional work can take the total outside this range.

Can my existing radiators stay when the boiler is replaced?

Often they can, provided their condition, output and pipework suit the proposed system. The engineer should assess cleaning needs and leaks. A powerflush is not automatically suitable for every old system.

How long should I allow for gas boiler replacement?

Allow around 1–2 days for the work described in this guide. Confirm timing with the engineer because access, parts and unexpected faults can change the schedule.

Will I receive four quotations?

Up to four quotations may be available. The number depends on your postcode, the work required and the capacity of suitable independent engineers. There is no obligation to accept a quote.
