What is combi boiler installation?

A combi boiler supplies heating and heats mains water as it is needed. A combi swap is relatively contained work; converting a system or regular boiler can also involve removing a hot-water cylinder, redundant tanks and their pipework. If you are unsure whether you have a combi, system or regular boiler now, our boiler types guide explains how to tell.

Signs you may need combi boiler installation

  • Removing a cylinder could give you useful cupboard space.
  • Your existing combi needs replacement.
  • A heating refit is an opportunity to review how hot water is supplied.

Work to discuss before booking

  • Suitability: check the mains supply and the number of outlets used at the same time.
  • System choice: compare on-demand hot water with keeping stored hot water; a household using several showers at once may benefit from retaining a cylinder.
  • Conversion planning: identify which tanks can be removed and whether existing showers, pumps and pipework are compatible with mains-pressure supply.
  • Fitting: reconfigure heating and hot-water pipes, fit the specified boiler and controls, and arrange gas, flue and condensate connections.
  • Finishing: remove agreed redundant equipment, clean and commission the system, test hot-water delivery and explain the controls. Include cupboard and ceiling repairs in the scope if required.

Budgeting for combi boiler installation

Our national guide range is £2,200–£5,000. This is indicative, not a fixed quote or a measured local average. A straightforward combi exchange sits differently from a conversion involving tanks and a cylinder. Long gas runs, poor access to loft tanks, shower changes and extensive making good can take a conversion beyond the guide range.

The service guide allows 1–3 days. That is a planning estimate, not a promised completion time; diagnosis, parts delivery and additional work may extend the job. Ask for labour, materials, VAT and exclusions to be clear before accepting.

Details to include in your enquiry

Tell the engineer about every bathroom, the showers you use and whether taps run weakly when another outlet is open. Say whether retaining an immersion-heated cylinder matters to you. Do not choose a combi solely because its rated output is larger.

Choosing a suitably qualified engineer

Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the current ID card and its work categories against the Gas Safe Register; a plumbing qualification alone is not enough for gas boiler work. For an installation, replacement or move, ask who will handle the applicable notification and handover records. England and Wales use Building Regulations compliance certificates for notified boiler installations; Scotland and Northern Ireland have different procedures. The Building Regulations guidance explains the different routes. A warranty registration and a commissioning record are separate from building-control paperwork.

Compare the proposed work before deciding

Boiler-prices.co.uk introduces homeowners to independent heating businesses. One online enquiry can lead to up to four quotations, depending on the job, postcode and engineer availability. We do not employ the engineers or carry out the work. Companies joining the network are asked for relevant insurance details and references; you should still check the firm you intend to appoint.

Send your boiler enquiry. Submitting the form is free; chargeable visits must be agreed separately. The chosen business is responsible for its quotation, appointments and work.

Practical questions about combi boiler installation

Use these answers to prepare for a survey or a booking call.

How much does combi boiler installation cost?

The national guide range is £2,200–£5,000. Your written quote depends on the appliance, access and agreed scope. Additional work can take the total outside this range.

Will a combi improve weak mains water flow?

A combi does not cure an inadequate incoming mains supply. The engineer should measure pressure and flow and consider simultaneous demand before recommending a model or a different hot-water arrangement.

How long should I allow for combi boiler installation?

Allow around 1–3 days for the work described in this guide. Confirm timing with the engineer because access, parts and unexpected faults can change the schedule.

Will I receive four quotations?

Up to four quotations may be available. The number depends on your postcode, the work required and the capacity of suitable independent engineers. There is no obligation to accept a quote.
