What to put in the enquiry
- Give the boiler make and model if you can see them without opening the casing; mention its approximate age and any warranty.
- For a breakdown, note the fault code, what stopped working and whether pressure keeps changing. A code is a clue, not a confirmed diagnosis.
- For a replacement or combi conversion, describe the bathrooms, current cylinder and tanks, and how many showers run together.
- For a move, describe both positions, the floor level, flue access and any building-work deadline.
- For servicing, say when it was last done and whether you also want a landlord gas safety check.
- Mention difficult parking, restricted access, loft positions and how the engineer can contact you.
Why quotations differ
The boiler model, local labour rates, pipe lengths and condition of the heating water affect installation costs. A roof flue can need scaffolding; concealed pipes may involve lifting floors. Bigger properties can need more radiators or stored hot water. Repairs depend on diagnostic time, parts and whether a return visit is needed.
Ask whether making good includes plaster, tiles and decoration. For replacement work, agree the cleaning method, filter and controls. A longer warranty can have conditions about installer status, registration and annual servicing, so compare the terms as well as the number of years.
Before you accept
Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the current ID card and its work categories against the Gas Safe Register; a plumbing qualification alone is not enough for gas boiler work.
Companies joining the network are asked for insurance details and references. Check the written scope, payment stages, waste removal, expected disruption and aftercare with the chosen business. Can I request a repair without knowing the failed part?
Yes. Describe the symptoms and any displayed fault code. The engineer can explain the diagnostic charge and investigate before quoting for the repair.
Can I use this form for a suspected gas leak?
No. This form is not monitored as an emergency service. Leave the affected area and contact the relevant gas emergency service immediately; do not wait for a quotation response.
