A gas boiler service typically costs £70 to £130. It's a quick visit, normally 45 to 90 minutes, in which an engineer checks the boiler runs safely and efficiently. Many manufacturers want one every year to keep the warranty valid.

Service cost by job size

Typical UK gas boiler service cost, by job size

Job sizeTypical costWhat it usually looks like
Small£70–£90A straightforward unit with easy access
Typical£90–£110A standard visit with fuller checks
Large£110–£130Harder access, or service parts needed. Repairs are not included

These tiers divide the £70–£130 guide for gas boiler servicing. Prices can be higher in some parts of the country, and a combined service and safety check for a rental property may be priced differently.

What an engineer checks

  • Flue gas analysis, to confirm the boiler is burning cleanly.
  • The burner and heat exchanger, inspected and cleaned where needed.
  • Seals, the condensate trap and the pressure of the system.
  • Safety devices tested, with a check for gas leaks and flue integrity.
  • A record of what was found, which many warranties ask you to keep.

What a service is not

A service doesn't fix a fault. If the engineer finds a failed part, repairing it is charged on top, and our repair cost guide shows what that can run to. It also isn't the same thing as a landlord's gas safety check, which has its own legal purpose and paperwork.

Book a Gas Safe registered engineer, and look them up on the Gas Safe Register. If your boiler is under warranty, read the conditions before you book, because some require servicing by a particular route.

Keep the record

File each service report with the boiler manual. If you sell the house, or the manufacturer asks for proof, it's the quickest evidence you have.
